1. BRIEF BACKGROUND

Adequate education in Zimbabwe for orphaned children is not easily accessible. These underprivileged children often unable to regularly attend schools due to primary lack of school fees and food among other things. These children are missing on key skills needed to be a functioning member of the society as education is considered a key in life. Education of those orphans in Zimbabwe is lacking and in dire need of improvement.

Malachite Travel and Tours has a component of a Corporate Social Responsibility, an aspect of ploughing back to the community.

 

Tourism is one of the sectors which were hard hit by covid 19, and Malachite Travel and Tours was not spared.  This has also affected the whole line of support that was being offered by the organisation towards the underprivileged children, thereby leaving the children vulnerable.

  1. AREA OF OPERATION

The project was being implemented in selected schools in Kariba, along lower Zambezi. Currently the organisation was supporting students from two urban schools, namely Nyamhunga Primary Schools and Nyamhunga High School.

However, the organisation was looking forward to stretching its support to accommodates kids from Kariba Rural areas.

  1. SCOPE OF WORK

Malachite Travel and Tours as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility support underprivileged kids with school fees, school uniforms, stationery, and sanitary wear from Primary level to tertiary education. Two stuff members have been tasked to run the SRC project.

School and home visits are done to assess the performance and their living standards of the supported students.

Malachite Travel and Tours supports school extra activities such as school trips, sports and other school functions that requires financial support. This will make students learn the practical side as well as realise their talents.

  1. TARGET GROUPS

Underprivileged children are in different levels coming from different backgrounds. These includes orphans, Child headed families and coming from very poor home background.

The identification process is done in schools by their teachers and the School Development Committee (SDA), since they are the custodians of children. The selection process is gender sensitive.  

  1. SOURCE OF FUNDS

Most of the funds comes from Malachite Travel and Tours proceeds. Donations in cash or kind from well-wishers are most welcome.
